Jazz and Self-Determination: Session 2 @ The People’s Forum

Join Althea as she co-moderates a panel discussion on Jazz and Self-Determination alongside musician and scholar Ras Moshe Burnett. There will be a particular emphasis on the independent record labels, social formations, and lofts that presented music in Brooklyn and New York City.

On Sunday, June 2, the panel will include:

Aurora Flores (Composer, founder and leader of Zon del Barrio. Educator, journalist and president of Aurora Communications)
Warren Smith (Percussionist, composer. Founder of Studio WIS (NYC 1967-1996). Educator (SUNY Old Westbury 1971-1996)Member of Collective Black Artists and Strata East Records. Founding member of Max Roach’s M’BOOM Percussion Ensemble and Bill Cole’s Untempered Ensemble)
William J. Harris (Poet, author of The LeRoi Jones/Amiri Baraka Reader and The Poetry and Poetics of Amiri Baraka:The Jazz Aesthetic. Former English MFA director at University of Kansas)
David Henderson (Poet and founding member of Umbra Writers Workshop (1962-1968). Co-founder of The Black Arts Movement. educator. Author of ‘Scuse Me While I Kiss The Sky:Jimi Hendrix-Voodoo Child. Contributed to Black Fire (edited by Amiri Baraka & Larry Neal)
Sam Anderson (Activist, Educator, mathematician. Co-founder of The Black Arts Movement. Founder of Black Education for Excellence. Contributed to Black Fire (1968 edited by Amiri Baraka & Larry Neal)
Author of The Black Holocaust for Beginners)
