Althea’s first major publication stemming from her on-going research into the collection of musical instruments from the Mandé region of West Africa (including present-day Mali, Senegal, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau and the Gambia) currently housed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art is now available!
It is a chapter titled “Sorcerers, Acrobats and Cross-Dressers: What the Met’s Collection of West African Instruments Tells Us About the Mandé World,” in a larger volume titled Enduring Rhythms: Essays in Honor of J. Kenneth Moore published by the Department of Musical Instruments at the Met (2024).
